McNeese State University
McNeese State University has an important responsibility for education, research, and service in Southwest Louisiana. Founded in 1939, the University offers its students the opportunity to attend a mid-sized university with a tradition of academic excellence in a friendly atmosphere. The oak-shaded campus enjoys a mild climate, making outdoor activities possible all year-round. Because of the University’s close proximity to the Calcasieu River, the Gulf of Mexico, Prien Lake, and Lake Charles, students enjoy a wide variety of outdoor sports such as swimming, boating, skiing, fishing, and sailing.
McNeese is oriented both to the liberal arts and to professional programs. Core requirements for all students and degree programs in the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics reflect the University’s emphasis on education, business, engineering, and nursing programs. At McNeese State University, more than 8,500 students can choose from more than eighty degree programs offered by the Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Science, the Division of General and Basic Studies, and the Doré School of Graduate Studies. There are students from 56 parishes, 34 states, and nearly 50 countries.
The University is accredited, and many professors have earned national recognition for excellence and academic leadership. Dedicated faculty work closely with students to provide instruction with a personal touch. McNeese has been rated as one of the top schools in the nation for the individual attention students receive from faculty. The University has a nationally known creative writing program and four Senior Fulbright Scholars on its faculty that have taught at universities around the world. The University also offers outstanding performing arts degrees and offers excellent professional programs in engineering, business, education, and nursing. McNeese has strong links with industries, which hire many of the University’s graduates in environmental science, engineering, chemistry, computer science, and related fields.
McNeese students are offered an opportunity to excel not only in the classroom, but also in the various extracurricular activities offered on campus. Many students participate in the more than 85 academic, social, religious, honorary, professional, service and Greek organizations available. The McNeese Athletics Program is a member of the Southland Conference and has won national recognition in virtually every sport. In addition, the McNeese Intramural and Recreation Complex offers more than twenty intramural and club sports which allow McNeese students to compete against each other and against students from other universities. Whether it’s a relaxing sauna or a fast-paced game of one-on-one basketball, the Recreation Complex has the facilities to accommodate every type of student.
McNeese State University seeks to stimulate students to maximum intellectual growth and love of learning, to cultivate the skills necessary for critical thinking and effective expression, to foster understanding of the multicultural world community, and to develop a sense of opportunities, resources, and expertise to achieve academic, persona, and career goals within an atmosphere conductive to their total development.
