REGINALD F. LEWIS SCHOLARS JOIN BOARD FOR AUGUST MEETING

The Reginald F. Lewis Scholars, a group of black male students chosen to participate in a three-year curated educational experience focused on academic, social and community service engagements held their annual retreat this week. During a presentation to the board, the UL System VP for Advancement Dr. Claire Norris provided an update on the scholars and announced a $1.5 million fundraising goal to support the first three cohorts.“We anticipated growth in our scholars in the traditional measures such as improved grades and leadership, ” Dr.  Norris said. “What we didn’t anticipate was the affect of the brotherhood, the advancement of self efficacy, and a broadened understanding of diversity.” Three Scholars presented to the Board of Supervisors about their individual experiences. Robert Hill, an art history major from the University of New Orleans, discussed his summer internship at the Ogden Museum of Art. “During my internship, I was able to set foot in my degree interest while broadening my understanding of career pathways within museums, Hill said. Thanks to connections within the Reginald F. Lewis program I was able to create my own network with the museum’s curators and administration. “Lance Jones, a political science major from Nicholls State University, spoke on the social aspect of the RFL Scholars.“Through constant mentorship and coaching, the program has shown me that nothing can stop us,” Jones said. Ebenezer Aggrey, a business major from Northwestern State University, spoke on how the service component has changed his outlook. “The Scholars program has helped me recognize a love for community service,” Aggrey said. “Service is more than just collecting hours to make your resume look good, it’s about doing what you can to better your community.”The program is designed not only for individual impacts but also to improve retention and outcomes for Black male students throughout the System. Two black male students from each of the nine member institutions are chosen as Scholars annually. The first cohort was introduced in June 2021 and the second cohort in June 2022. The program will reach capacity in June 2023 but each year a new cohort will be added to account for graduates. Along with attending the Board meeting, the Scholars retreat consisted of Emergenetics personality testing to identify each Scholar’s personal strengths, a surprise recognition during the Board of Regents meeting, a tour of Raising Cane’s headquarters, a tour of the State Capitol and interactions with lawmakers and State Treasurer John Schroeder, and a service project with Our Lady of Franciscan Missionaries Health System combatting food deserts. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana sponsored the Scholars Retreat for the second year running. Their senior data engineer Sidney Harris visited to meet the Scholars and extend well wishes.
