Northwestern State University was established in 1884 as Louisiana’s Normal School, dedicated to the training of teachers. Its location in historic Natchitoches is the oldest continually occupied site for higher education in Louisiana.
Over the years, the curriculum and degree offerings expanded to include a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees until the school was renamed Northwestern State University in 1970. Northwestern State has instructional sites in Shreveport, Alexandria, Marksville, Leesville/Fort Polk, and Barksdale Air Force Base. NSU is a pioneer in online learning and its global campus, ENSU, currently offers 39 degree programs and a number of post- baccalaureate certification programs online.
NSU is home to the Louisiana Scholars’ College, the state’s designated Honors College
NSU offers the state’s first competency-based degree program
NSU’s College of Nursing is the oldest baccalaureate nursing program in Louisiana and is ranked as one of the best in the U.S
NSU has developed partnerships with numerous community and technical colleges throughout the state that allow credit transfers to save students time and money
