Dr. Jerry Brunson is an Associate Professor and Department Head of Biology and Microbiology at Northwestern State University (NSU). He earned his M.S. from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) and his Ph.D. from LSU Health Shreveport, where he received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies. His dedication to teaching has been recognized with awards at LSU Health Shreveport, ULM, and NSU.
Dr. Brunson is deeply engaged in student mentorship, curriculum innovation, and departmental leadership. He has been instrumental in enhancing academic programs, such as developing pre-med and pre-professional roadmaps, organizing the annual Fall Biology Career Fair, and building strategic partnerships with professional schools and healthcare organizations. These efforts have significantly expanded students' access to professional and academic opportunities.
His research focuses on environmental microbiology, particularly the prevalence of Aeromonas in Louisiana waterways and the identification of bacteriophages for potential use in aquaculture. He also collaborates on projects studying the bacterial and chemical composition of natural springs. His research actively involves undergraduate students and has resulted in student presentations, publications, and awards.
Beyond his departmental role, Dr. Brunson contributes to university-wide initiatives. He plays a key role in STEM outreach events, serves on academic committees and strategic planning committees, and leads leadership development programs such as IGNITE Leadership. His work in grant writing, program development, and community engagement reflects his dedication to academic excellence, student success, and institutional advancement.
