About the Initiative

Our Work. Their Future. One Mission
The UL System Modernization for Student Success Initiative helps us understand where universities are today and where we can update systems and processes that matter most for our students. This phase is about learning and listening so we can reduce friction for student and better support the people who help them succeed every day.
About the Initiative
The University of Louisiana System is beginning an exploratory process to better understand how our eight universities can work together in more coordinated, student-focused, and sustainable ways.
The Board of Supervisors has challenged the System to take a thoughtful look at what a more integrated approach to operations, technology, academics, and services might mean for the UL System. This is an early step in gathering information, asking questions, and hearing from the people who know our campuses best.
No decisions have been made. This is a discovery phase focused solely on understanding our current environment and determining what areas, if any, warrant deeper study.
Why This Matters
For many years, UL System institutions have operated independently, each with unique strengths, structures, and systems. As higher education continues to change, we have an opportunity to look at whether closer coordination could:
- Improve student experiences and mobility
- Support faculty and staff more effectively
- Reduce duplication and streamline processes
- Create more reliable, real-time information
- Strengthen the financial health of our universities
This initiative gives us the space to consider these questions together and determine what approaches might help us move forward as a stronger, more unified System.
What the Board Has Authorized
To begin this exploration, the Board has asked the System to:
- Conduct preliminary research into the costs, benefits, and feasibility of potential Systemwide alignment.
- Form a task force with representatives from each university across key functional areas.
- Engage external experts who can help with technical analysis.
- Bring back a proposed study plan—with scope, timeline, and estimated costs—for the Board’s review at a future meeting.
Alignment to the UL System Strategic Plan (2025–2030)
This initiative is exploratory and intended to help us understand how future opportunities may align with the priorities outlined in the UL System Strategic Plan. The goal is to learn where coordination or improved systems could support our long-term mission. The review itself does not assume any specific direction or outcome.
Operational Excellence and Efficiency
As part of the discovery process, we will look at how our current operational and technology structures function across the System. This includes understanding areas where processes differ, where campuses experience challenges, and where coordinated efforts may or may not offer benefits. The focus is on gaining clarity about what supports effective operations now and what opportunities may exist for the future.
Student Access and Success
The review will help us better understand how students experience our universities, particularly in areas such as mobility, navigation, course availability, and systemwide support. Exploring these topics will allow us to identify whether there are approaches that could enhance the student experience while preserving institutional strengths.
Research and Talent Development
This phase will include learning how data, research capacity, and academic resources are currently structured across campuses. Part of this discovery is determining whether the System has opportunities to support statewide workforce and talent goals in new or improved ways.
External Affairs
Through this study, we will examine how information, services, and identity function across our universities and how coordinated efforts might support communication, partnerships, and public trust. Athletics, academic offerings, and shared initiatives all play a role in how the System serves Louisiana, and this review will help clarify what approaches best advance that mission.
Your Voice Matters: Share Your Feedback
We want to hear from faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members across the state. Your insights will help shape the direction and priorities of this transformation effort.
